The Treatment Room
Royals activate OF Mark Teahen
Royals activated outfielder Mark Teahen from the 15-day disabled list.Teahen returns as the starting right fielder. He was playing some first base before hurting his left elbow, t with Billy Butler now occupying that role there is no room for him there.
Dodgers activate 1b Nomar Garciaparra
Dodgers activated infielder Nomar Garciaparra from the 15-day disabled list.
Garciaparra will be available as a pinch-hitter, but since he can’t do more than jog because of his strained calf, manager Grady Little said he would use him only in a “game-breaking” situation
Angels activate 2b Eric Aybar
Erick Aybar has been activated off the 15-day DL. Aybar was put on the DL on August 20 because of a strained left hamstring. It’s doubtful he’ll get many opportunities this month, unless the Angels clinch a playoff spot earlier than expected.
Tigers activate LHP Kenny Rogers
Tigers activated LHP Kenny Rogers from the 15-day disabled list. The Gambler s pitched five innings and allowed one run and two hits Wednesday against the White Sox in his returning start.
Indians activate OF David Dellucci
Indians activated outfielder David Dellucci from the 60-day disabled list.
Dellucci probably won’t do anything more than pinch-hit during his first week back from hamstring surgery.
Tigers activate OF Gary Sheffiled
Tigers activated designated hitter Gary Sheffield from the 15-day disabled list.
Sheffield is 0-for-11 since coming off the DL. It’s never taken him long to find his swing after absences, so if he doesn’t get it together soon, it’ll be safe to assume that his shoulder remains a major problem.
Braves activate SS Edgar Renteria
Braves activated shortstop Edgar Renteria from the 15-day disabled list. The Braves will play it safe with Renteria and not start him everyday right away.
Pirates activate C/OF Ryan Doumit
Pirates activated catcher-outfielder Ryan Doumit from 15-day disabled list.
Doumit had been out since Aug. 14 with a sprained wrist. The Pirates are trying both Nyjer Morgan and Steve Pearce in the outfield, so what playing time Doumit gets this month figures to come as a catcher.
Padres activate 2b Brian Giles
Padres activated second baseman Marcus Giles from the 15-day disabled list. Giles is back after missing 15 days with a knee injury. He’ll compete for playing time at second base, but it looks like we will receive fewer at bats than Geoff Blum the rest of the way.
Angels activate RHP Bartolo Colon
Angels activated RHP Bartolo Colon from the 15-day disabled list. He’s back, but the Angels still haven’t said when he’ll go back into the rotation. He threw a bullpen session Saturday, so he will be an option as soon as Tuesday or Wednesday.
Orioles place LHP Erik Bedard on the DL
Orioles placed LHP Erik Bedard on the 60-day disabled list with a strained oblique. Bedard has been the fantasy ace of the season and head to head owners will see this as a major blow.
Transactions
Reds call up 1B Joey Votto
Reds recalled first baseman Joey Votto from Triple-A Louisville. Votto has hit two homeruns in five games but with Scott Hatteberg in his way he will get little playing time.
Padres sign RHP Bret Tomko
Padres agreed to terms with RHP Brett Tomko for the remainder of the season.
It’s yet to be announced whether Tomko will go right into the rotation or whether he’ll pitch in middle relief first. He doesn’t figure to have any fantasy value, though Petco Park will be good for him.
Dodgers call up OF Delwyn Young
Dodgers recalled outfielder Delwyn Young from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Young went 7-for-14 for the Dodgers last month. He’ll be the club’s fifth outfielder after hitting .337/.384/.571 for Las Vegas.
Royals call up RHP Kyle Davis
Royals recalled RHP Kyle Davies from Double-A Wichita. Davies should not be rostered in any leagues.
Astros call up OF Jason Lane
Astros recalled outfielder Jason Lane from Triple-A Round Rock.
Lane will be behind both Luke Scott and Chris Burke on the right-field depth chart, so he shouldn’t be much of a factor down the stretch.
Diamondbacks sign RHP Bob Wickman
Diamondbacks signed RHP Bob Wickman for the remainder of the season. With some of their relievers tiring the D-backs decided to send for reinforcements and sign Wickman. Wickman is ineligible for the postseason roster.
Rockies call up LHP Mark Redman
Rockies purchased the contract of LHP Mark Redman from Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Redman will pitch in middle relief for now, but he’s likely to make at least a couple of starts before the end of the month.
Orioles sign RHP Victor Zambrano
Orioles purchased the contract of Victor Zambrano from the Pirates. Zambrano had a 5.56 ERA in 13 starts after joining the Pirates’ Triple-A affiliate, so it still doesn’t appear that he’s ready to help a major league team a year after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Yankees call up LHP Kei Igawa
Yankees recalled LHP Kei Igawa from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Though he pitched well in Triple-A, Igawa doesn’t figure to do more than mop-up over the rest of the year.
Yankees call up RHP Jeff Karstens
Yankees recalled RHP Jeff Karstens from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Even though he’s 0-3 with a 11.20 ERA in the majors this season, Karstens figures to get the most work of Yankee call up. The club still thinks he has a future as a middle reliever.
WHO’S HOT & WHO’S NOT
HOT
Alex Rodriguez- One of the greatest seasons of all time continued last week in a big way. A-rod hit .579 last week with 9 runs scored 2 steals and 10 runs batted in. A-rod also hit seven homeruns to leave him just eight shy of sixty.
Eric Byrnes- Byrnes had a great past week hitting .375 with 9r, 1HR, 4 RBI and 5 SB.
Byrnes now has a outside shot at twenty five homeruns and fifty stolen bases.
Chipper Jones- It looks like Chipper has re-discovered where the zone is! Last week Chipper hit .368 with 3HR, 8 RBI, and 9R.
NOT
Milton Bradley- PETCO Park looks like it’s finally caught up on Bradley and he has struggled of late, last week Bradley hit just .167 with no homeruns and only one run scored.
Jose Reyes- Reyes really struggled last week hitting .091 with no homeruns steals or RBI. Reyes reached base just three times last week and was caught stealing in his one attempt.
The Week Ahead- Who to Pick Up & Who to Avoid
PICK UP
LA Angels- The Angels play six away games this week against two teams that have completely given up. They open the week with a three game set against an Erik Bedardless Batimore and finish it against the Chicago White Sox.
AVOID
Atlanta Braves- With their playoff hopes all but gone the Braves hitters face a tough schedule this week. They open up the week with three away games against the Mets and finish it with three against the Nats in RFK.
Kansas City Royals- The Royals play six games this week three at home against the Twins and then three away against the AL Central leading Indians. The Royals have already started building for next year and their lineup will be filled with prospects and minor leaguers. Luckily they avoid Johan Santana unluckily they do face CC Sabathia.
