With Jayson Werth claiming a big role in the outfield and Shane Vicorino healthy, Bourn is likely to be used as he was back in April. He can pinch-run and act as a defensive replacement.

Tigers activated RHP Jair Jurrjens from the 15-day disabled list. Jurrjens pitched 5 innings of one run ball Tuesday but afterwards complained of soreness and may miss a start next week.

Pirates activate RHP Saloman Torres
Pirates activated RHP Salomon Torres from the 15-day disabled list.
Torres missed three weeks because of a sore elbow. He’ll try to work his way back into a setup role.

Royals activated outfielder Mark Teahen from the 15-day disabled list.Teahen returns as the starting right fielder. He was playing some first base before hurting his left elbow, t with Billy Butler now occupying that role there is no room for him there.

Dodgers activate 1b Nomar Garciaparra
Dodgers activated infielder Nomar Garciaparra from the 15-day disabled list.
Garciaparra will be available as a pinch-hitter, but since he can’t do more than jog because of his strained calf, manager Grady Little said he would use him only in a “game-breaking” situation

Cubs activated outfielder Alfonso Soriano from the 15-day disabled list. Soriano said himself that his quad was only at 90% so don’t expect him to steal many bases down the stretch.

Mets activate OF Endy Chavez
Mets activated outfielder Endy Chavez from the 15-day disabled list. Chavez missed more than 2 1/2 months with a partially torn hamstring. Chavez will get the odd start in the outfield but will mainly be used as a defensive substitute/pinch runner.

Braves place LHP Chuck James on the DL
Braves placed starting pitcher Chuck James on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Aug. 17, with tightness in the back of his pitching shoulder. James had hoped to avoid the DL but the Braves decided it was best if he took two weeks off. Expect James to return to the rotation in September.

Cubs activate C Henry Blanco
Cubs activated catcher Henry Blanco from the 60-day disabled list.

Blanco, who missed nearly three months with a herniated disc, will get more playing time than Koyie Hill was, but Jason Kendall is expected to remain the Cubs’ starting catcher.

Dodgers place corner infielder Nomar Garciaparra on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left calf. With just six homers and a batting average of .280 Nomar is no longer a viable option in mixed leagues. Shea Hillenbrand will serve as his replacement.

Red Sox activated RHP Curt Schilling from the 15-day disabled list. After giving up four runs over six innings in his returning start Schilling bounced back Sunday against the O’s allowing just five base runners over six shutout innings.

Cubs place OF Alfonso Soriano on the DL
Cubs placed OF Alfonso Soriano on the 15-day disabled list with a torn right quadriceps. The Cubs where hoping that Soriano would be back in 3-4 weeks but an MRI revealed that the tear would take 6 weeks to heal.

Cardinals place LHP Mike Maroth on the DL
Cardinals placed LHP Mike Maroth on the 15-day disabled list with left elbow tendinitis.
Maroth tossed 7 1/3 innings of one-run ball in his Cardinals debut, but has been demolished for 46 runs (38 earned) over 24 1/3 innings since then.

Astros place OF Hunter Pence on the DL
Astros placed outfielder Hunter Pence on the 15-day disabled list with a chip fracture in his right wrist. Before the injury, Pence was batting .330 with 12 HR and was leading the chase for NL rookie of the year. Pence will miss 4-6 weeks, leaving Chris Burke as the Astros’ primary center fielder.

Angels place RHP Bartolo Colon on the DL
Angels placed RHP Bartolo Colon the 15-day disabled list with a sore right elbow. The Angels will probably leave Colon on the DL for more than the minimum to ensure that when he comes back he comes back for good. Dustin Moseley will be his replacement.

Brewers place RHP Ben Sheets on the DL
Brewers placed RHP Ben Sheets on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 15, with an injury to his right middle finger. Sheets will miss 4-6 weeks after an ultrasound revealed a partial tear of the tissue surrounding the tendon in his right middle finger. I wouldn’t be surprised if this injury costs him the rest of the season or at least limits him when he does return. Gallardo owners should be delighted by this news as now with Sheets out, Gallardo has plenty of time to win out Vargas’s rotation spot.

 

Mets activate Jorge Sosa from the DL

Mets activated RHP Jorge Sosa from the 15-day disabled list. Since returning Sosa has struggled, giving up eight runs in ten innings of work. Sosa’s season record is now 7-5 with a 4.36 ERA. Sosa owners should be looking to trade him as he looks like the favorite to lose his spot when Pedro returns.

 

Braves activate RHP John Smoltz from the DL

Braves activated RHP John Smoltz from the 15-day disabled list. John Smoltz fanned 11 in seven scoreless innings against the Reds on Wednesday. Smoltz is 9-5 with a 2.88 ERA for the season.

Angels activated outfielder Garret Anderson from the 15-day disabled list. He and Reggie Willits will likely alternate playing left field and filling the DH role. Anderson needs to produce for a couple of weeks before he’ll again be an option in mixed leagues
