The “seven habits” fleshed out …

In our last installment of the monologues, we outlined the seven habits of highly effective fantasy baseball owners - otherwise known as “FantasyBaseballMafia Studs”. Conveniently, the mnemonic for the seven habits happens to be … “FBM STUD”.

It stands for …

Be Flexible
Be Brave
Maximize your innings and position limits
Be a Statistician
Trade
Update player values
Don’t give up - don’t ever give up (the Jimmy Valvano clause)

Today, we will begin to illustrate these concepts.

The seven habits of highly effective fantasy baseball managers

Those of us who have entered the FantasyBaseballMafia community through the MLB.com Fantasy 411 show are familiar with phrases like “hitters hit” and “the road to fifth place is littered with closers of the future”.

As a member of the Mafia, I recently challenged myself to come up with some catch phrases of my own.  I went searching for some insights that could be encapsulated in a neat word or sentence and can become the mantra of every FantasyBaseballMafia member.

The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Fantasy Baseball Managers

Greetings from the Middle East!  As the first month of the season winds down, teams begin to settle into their “starting positions” in the standings.

In my fantasy baseball life, I have made a run at the flag from every possible place in the standings, and, over time, I have noticed some of the habits that give owners the best chance of winning their leagues. I have collected some of these tips, and I present them to you in a new mini-series entitled, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Fantasy Baseball Managers” …

Letting Go

One of the keys to in-season fantasy baseball strategy is how active you are in turning over your roster. Different managers approach this very differently.

I once knew a fantasy baseball manager named Bobby who used to drop and add every single player all year long … including his first round picks. His policy was: “if you didn’t produce all week, you’re dead to me”.  If Bobby is still out there today, he probably already dropped Jose Reyes for Joey Gathright.

You would think that such an approach is the easiest way to finish in tenth place, yet I recall being shocked when this manager finished in fourth.  Am I shocking you?

Man-crush or Man-crash?

It’s too early in the season to make a statement about which players are going to have great or miserable years this year. That said, I have compiled a small list of players I was very curious about going into the draft. I believe some of these players have already answered some questions in this young season.

I would like to officially invite everybody to join me this Wednesday night for another installment of “Peteinjordan’s Fantasy Baseball for Dummies” on blogtalkradio.com.  I hope that you will find the show both entertaining and informative.  You do not have to be a certified ‘dummy’ to appreciate it, so don’t be shy, and hop on my camel’s back for a fantasy baseball joyride through the Jordanian desert.

Last week, I identified some of my ‘man-crush’ players entering the ‘08 season and the rounds in which they were selected. This week, I want to take a pulse on how they are doing and make my early assessment of whether they are justifying my love …

Man-crush Drafting

Happy Opening Day, mafiosos!

Now that drafting season is over, it is not hard to figure out who you have a ‘man-crush’ on. If you have multiple teams, and certain guys are on all of them, then you, my friends, have a ‘man-crush’.

This is because it is unlikely for you to get the same player on all your teams unless you value that player a bit higher than everyone else.  Let me show you my ‘man-crushes’ for this year …

So, draft day approaches.

You’re stash of mags is all worn and smeared with hot sauce. You’ve heard all of the podcasts. You know about “pitch-or-ditch”. You’re down with “stars and scrubs”. You’ve memorized the “List of Twelve”. You’re all over the “control the draft system” and the “LIMA Plan” … as the “so manly, he must be gay” guy in the MockDraftCentral mock drafts says, “NOW, it’s YOUR TURN!!!”
