that Santana will not be dealt if a Garza for Upton/Young deal is completed. The insider from Fantasy baseball mafia.com has struck again.
Cincinnati Reds Executive Vice President and General Manager Wayne Krivsky today announced the signing of free agent All-Star RHP Francisco Cordero to a 4-year contract through the 2011 season, with a club option for 2012. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.Cordero, 32, in his Major League career is 26-27 with a 3.29 ERA and 177 saves in 470 appearances with the Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers and Milwaukee Brewers. In his previous 4 seasons he averaged 38 saves, 70 appearances, 70 innings and 82 strikeouts. He set club records for saves in 2007 with the Brewers (44) and in 2004 while pitching for the Rangers (49), both years in which he was named an All-Star.In 2007, for the second straight season Cordero was selected as the Brewers’ Most Valuable Pitcher after his 44 saves ranked second in the National League (Arizona’s Jose Valverde, 47).
Cordero was given a jersey with No. 48, and Wayne said that’s how many saves he’s going to get this year. Cordero said he didn’t feel any pressure by that number — or the reported $46 million — and will use that as a goal for 2008.
Hey Guys,
Quick update from the Godfather,
MLB has started its Top 50 Prospect List , check it out! Speaking of MLB prospects, I don’t think Bob (the Senior Editor) will be mad if I go ahead and fill you in on one thing we plan to bring you this season. Full Minor league coverage from our own Mafia expert. Look for more info to come.
I also wanted to show you this very interesting link — according to Sports Illustrated’s Tom Verducci My Reds have the best chance for a turnaround in 2008.
1. Cincinnati Reds. The Reds weren’t quite as bad as their 72-90 record indicated and they hired a veteran manager who fits the turnaround profile: Baker. Cincinnati was outscored by 70 runs last year, but the eighth inning alone accounted for 53 of those runs. (The Reds allowed more runs in the eighth, 123, than any other inning.) The signing of closer Francisco Cordero, while an extravagant one (the most expensive free agent in franchise history at four years, $46 million), at least on paper, improves Cincinnati’s eighth-inning chances, with David Weathers and Jared Burtonsetting up Cordero.
The 2007 Reds had the worst bullpen in the NL (5.13 ERA). If they can improve the bullpen the way the 2007 Indians did, the 2008 Reds — especially if young hitters Jay Bruce and Joey Votto contribute — could be a playoff team.
The Fantasy Baseball Mafia insider gives us an update:
Yankees have offered Cabrera, Kennedy and Tabata to the Twins.
While I cannot give you alot of information.
Santana wants to go to NY and the Twins have cleared roster spots. I can’t say anymore.
Do the math. Hint Hint.
It’s a tragedy to lose a friend, colleague and especially family member, but when you’re a huge fan of the game of Baseball as we all are, there’s a connection between the athletes and the fans to some degree that shouldn’t be ignored.
When players I enjoy watching retire, switch teams, or die there’s a part of me that gets emotional and when that player’s young with a family it hurts just a little bit more.
