Former MLB.com Host Jim Leyritz has been charged in connection with a DUI homicide occurring in Fort Lauderdale, Fla over the weekend. I’ve never made it a secret that I’m not a big fan of Mr Leyritz or his voice, but I would never wish this on anyone, not even you Jim. I ask those of you who pray to do so for Jim and the family of this young woman who was killed in the accident. They will need all the help they can get through this troubling time.
Former Major Leaguer Jim Leyritz, a World Series hero with the Yankees and a current baseball analyst, was charged with DUI homicide after a Friday morning crash in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
According to Fort Lauderdale police, a car driven by Leyritz, a resident of Plantation, Fla., hit another car in the heart of Fort Lauderdale’s Himmarshee Street bar district early Friday morning. Leyritz was traveling northbound when he passed a red light and crashed with a westbound car at around 3:30 a.m., according to the Sun-Sentinel of Fort Lauderdale. The driver of the westbound car, a 30-year-old woman, was ejected from her car and pronounced dead at Broward General Medical Center, the paper reported.
Leyritz, whose 44th birthday was Thursday, refused a breathalyzer test, police said, according to WPLG-TV, which first reported the story.
The Broward Main Jail’s Web site reported that Leyritz was charged with two counts of drunken driving, including DUI that causes death to a human. He is being held held on a $11,000 bond.If convicted of the vehicular homicide while under the influence of alcohol charge, a second degree felony in Florida, Leyritz faces a fine of up to $10,000 and up to 15 years in prison. He also would lose his driver’s license permanently, although persons without prior offenses can apply for reinstatement after five years.
Leyritz, who hit a World Series-turning home run in 1996 for the Yankees, also played for the Angels, Rangers, Red Sox, Padres and Dodgers during his career. He has been a part-time, on-air correspondent for MLB.com, the YES Network and MSG Network since retiring from baseball.

One of the things that have bothered me about this disaster is Jim’s son. Jim use to have his son on the show a lot and talk about going to games together. It is really sad; I have not stopped thinking about that aspect of this incident all day. You only get one dad, I just feel really bad for the kids. It is a sad situation and I only hope that some of us could learn from others mistakes. I wont be a hypocrite and say, “You shouldn’t drink and drive.” A lot of us have done it on occasion and hopefully a tragedy such as this can a save another life down the road. The 20 $ for a cab could save someone’s life and your child’s dad.
