AL East Over / Under
At the onset of my Over / Under articles I did not intend to make the AL East my last topic. It never even crossed my mind. However, this might be the toughest of the divisions to scrutinize because my emotions are tied to it. I’ve been a New York Yankee Fan since my New Jersey born grandfather took me to Yankee Stadium in 1984. I witnessed the New York Yankees defeat the Chicago White Sox 7-0 on August 07th. Since then I’ve followed the Yankees as if they were a father figure. I understand they’ll spend any amount of money to help them win and for most baseball fans it’s an unfair advantage. But what I’ve learned over the past 7 years is that money can’t buy you a World Series. I’ve also learned that without the Red Sox, the Yankees wouldn’t be as hungry to win as they are. I do not hate the Red Sox, I’d love to have David Ortiz play for the Yankees and Manny being Manny is fun for baseball. All that asside, my feelings can’t prevent me from being honest and honestly I don’t think the best team in the AL East is the New York Yankees.
- Baltimore Wins 70-1/2 games
- Boston Wins 98-1/2 games
- New York Wins 96-1/2 games
- Tampa Bay Wins 77-1/2 games
- Toronto Wins 78-1/2 games
Please comment with the line number and “Over”, or “Under”.
Thank you for your comments throughout and I’ll be sure to post all the Over / Under columns in one post so we can see where we stand at the end of the 2008 season.

On todays Fantasy Baseball Mafia Live! Tony cincotta is joined by MILB.com guru Jonathan Mayo. Jonathan talks about his new book “Facing Clemens”
Jonathan Mayo is a senior writer for MLB.com and recently focused his efforts on covering minor league baseball and, notably, the baseball draft. Mayo worked on the broadcast team assembled for ESPN’s coverage of the first televised baseball draft in 2007, interviewing draftees after their selections. He is responsible for compiling MLB.com’s definitive list of baseball’s Top 50 prospects and has covered the Arizona Fall League, baseball’s winter meetings and many other events.
NL East Over / Under
I think the Phillies have the best lineup in the NL East with Howard, Utley, Rollins, Victorino and Burrell, but their starting rotation is nothing but Cole Hammels. The Mets didn’t really do anything this year. One example of that Johnny Estrada. They traded Mota for Estrada, then they non-tendered Estrada’s contract making him a Free Agent. Essentially they waived Mota…? But with Martinez healthy this season, I see them improving their record from last season. The Braves are starting to look like the Braves of yesteryear with the reaquisition of Glavine and Lopez, but they won’t have the same success as they had in their yeasteryear… years. Jair Jurrjins (isn’t that hand lotion) will be a quality pitcher in the NL, but Atlanta needed more bats after losing Renteria and Jones. The Nationals seem to have a few hidden gems in Milledge, Dukes and Clippard, but will they produce in 2008. I don’t think so. This might be Willy Mo’s year though. I like him in late rounds in 2008. Does anyone else think the 2008 Marlins have a shot at being the worst team in the history of baseball? Sure they traded away pretty much everything outside of Hanley Ramirez for a future, but what we may not see today is that in 3 years, this Marlins team will probably be playing in another World Series. But that’s the Marlin way!
- Atlanta Wins 82-1/2 games
- Florida Wins 66-1/2 games
- New York Wins 90-1/2 games
- Philadelphia Wins 86-1/2 games
- Washington Wins 76-1/2 games
Please comment with the line number and “Over”, or “Under”. Next week… AL East
Tony Cincotta is joined today by two authors at Fantasy Baseball Mafia. Ken in Toronto, he talks about his recent findings on the “effects of aging on hitters“. Chris in North Cal also joins Tony for a discussion about his column dealing with the Sophmore Slump. Both of them can be found on FantasyBaseballMafia.
Tony also covers his list of Fantasy baseball players that should be on your fantasy baseball draft prep list, but aren’t.
Don’t forget, Tony is joined by MILB’s Jonathan Mayo on thursday the 17th, next Thursday.
